When Social Workers become involved with your family, as a Mother your instant reaction is one of a "lioness". The very real fear that your children could be taken away if you are found wanting in your parenting capacity can overwhelm everything else.

This is where working with "frontline" organisations such as Families In Care during training is vital.

A service such as this works to support parents through their involvement with the Care system at a time they are incredibly vulnerable, upset, feeling criticised, confused, angry even in many cases. Their most valuable selling point to a parent? Whilst they adhere to strict safeguarding procedures, ultimately they are NOT Children's Services. They help a parent to work through the feelings that they are having and understand why there may be concerns about their parenting capacity - without judgement. That then has the result that dealing with Children's Services becomes far easier.

In the support I receive from Families In Care, my feelings are validated, I am spoken to in a respectful and non-judgemental manner and at no time do I feel like a "case". To a parent, this is invaluable (...).

Having completed placement with Families in Care I understand more about social exclusion and its consequences for individuals, whole families and communities.

It gives you support, there’s somebody there I can freely talk to, who does listen. Meeting other parents helps, I find out what’s happened to them and I feel that I’m not the only one going through all of this.

Families in Care are able to assist parents in many situations including coping with loss and helping children in due course to know their heritage and background.

I understand and appreciate more discriminatory factors affecting people’s lives in their communities, but also within the Child Protection Process and Care Proceedings.

It is important that people’s rights are not only respected, but that they come in on an equal basis…..

We have deliberately funded projects like Families in Care that are independent, to give advice and support to parents.

Families in Care has strong links with the Masters in Social Work programme delivered by the university. The organisation provides student placements for our Master’s students….. practice has shown that outcomes for looked after children are much improved when birth relatives receive appropriate support and are enabled to understand the legal and professional systems with which they come into contact. Students are always impressed by the commitment of the team and deeply value the opportunity to learn about this very challenging area of social work.
