Law

Families in Care at Durham, one of the Durham University Pro Bono Society student run projects, was established in 2014 by staff from Durham University Social Work Department, School of Law and Families in Care. The project was supported by staff from St Chad’s College during its early years.

Second and final year Family Law Students support the work of the charity training as Volunteer Advocates to assist parents during child protection and child care proceedings. As a result the students gain valuable experience preparing them for their  future careers.

Trusted by Families and Professionals

"Families in care offer a range of support for birthparents and their families. With there only being a handful of them their time is limited. The support of students being advocates is very helpful for FiC and parents.  For the students to go along to support parents at meetings, court or to chat, makes a huge difference and they are greatly appreciated.  All sides benefit. A very good learning experience for all the students, they get to see both sides."
