Safeguarding Children -
Policies and Legislation
It is impossible to provide you with all information that is out there about safeguarding children - but we will try to point you in the right direction to give you a good start!
Remember: The action we take to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm - is everyone’s responsibility.
Everyone who comes into contact with children and families has a role to play.
(Working Together to Safeguard Children 2013)
Working Together to Safeguard Children 2013
This guidance sets out how organisations and individuals should work together to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and how practitioners should conduct the assessment of children.
This guidance replaces Working Together to Safeguard Children (2010); The Framework for the Assessment of Children in Need and their Families (2000); and statutory guidance on making arrangements to safeguard and promote the welfare of children under section 11 of the Children Act 2004 (2007).

Safeguarding Children - Legislation
The safeguarding legislation is set out in
It also features in
and sets out the rights of children to be free from abuse.
The Government provides guidance in their document Working Together to Safeguard Children - see above.
Sounds quite straightforward - but the truth is that there is no single piece of legislation that covers all child protection in the UK, but rather a countless number of laws and guidance that are continually being amended, updated and revoked. Please have a look at NCPCC website and access their factsheets - highly recommended source of knowledge of safeguarding children legislation in the UK.

Law and Social Work Practice - Learning Resources
Freely available audio, video and
interactive resources that will help you
understand key aspects of the law applied
to social work practice.
Court Odreds and Pre-Proceedings Statutory Guidance for Local Authorities
The guidance sets out the steps local authorities need to take before applying for a court order. It also includes information on pre-proceedings and adoption, to support changes in practice to align with the PLO. This revised guidance came into force in England on 17 April 2014.
Please also go to Ministry of Justice website for further information about some changes in care proceedings that came into place in April 2014.
Care Proceedings and the Public Law Outline
Really good outline of care proceedings and the public law - from Enfield Council.
Case studies - criminal and family law
From Family Matters, the chambers of Maureen NgoziObi-Ezekpazu offering services in the field of children and families. Go to Maureen's website and scroll down for some recent decisions in criminal and family divisions. Great resources.
